SHS Guest Speaker: Ruth Slater (holocaust survivor)

Descriptions

Ms. Slater is what has been labeled a child survivor, having been born shortly after the official outbreak of World War II on September 1, 1939. Her father had already been sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Ms. Slater’s presentation, accompanied by a slide show of family photographs and some documents, attempts to convey to the students the idea that they were a family not so different from those in the audience, and their experiences, when the horrors perpetrated by Hitler spread throughout Europe. Ms. Slater will speak about her parents as young students, the rise of Hitler's power and the effects of Nazi laws on the family, her unusual childhood in Vienna with her mother and grandmother, as well as some details of her father's arrest and camp experience.
